  • What is a toplist? A toplist is a links site or page that ranks member sites by traffic they send to the toplist. it usually contains a list of sites (that either appear as images or text links) with rank mentioned (first on the left starting from 1), the site title and description and "hits" or "hits in" at the right end followed (but not always with "hits out") the "hits" or "hits in" are of most importance as this will determine where on the list the site will appear. the "hits out" are the number of visitors that clicked on that image or text link in order to go visit that site on the toplist. What determines rank / position of a site in the toplist? "hits" (may also appear as "hits in", "hits", "In" etc.) are the number of unique visitors (also called "traffic") that site has sent to the toplist. the more "hits" (unique visitors) that site sent the better ranking it gets on the toplist and the higher it will appear on the toplist. for example, if your a site A sent 34 hits and site B sent 55 hits and site C sent 13 hits: site B will appear at rank #1 first (at the first row) and higher at the toplist followed by site A bellow on the second row at rank #2 and finally and lastly site C at the bottom. you should aspire to be ranked as high as possible by sending as much hits as you can because the site that appears first on the list gets the most traffic back. But does a toplist know how much traffic is sent to it? ok, so I have send traffic to a toplist in order to appear in it and rank higher in it but how does the traffic I send get tracked ? most toplists give you a unique url to which your should send traffic to, it might look something like this: http://www.toplist-site.com/toplist/in.php?id=special_id that "special_id" is unique to your site only, the toplist will count each visitor that come to your site it has that special id at the end of it. the birth of TGP's, CJ and other heavily trafficked websites has evolved some of the toplists to a smarter type of toplists that DO NOT require to use a special url with a special id. the traffic system of these new toplist can track any visitor that comes from your site to the toplist the same your traffic logs can tell you where your visitors are coming from. with these toplists it is sufficient for you to use a url like this: http://www.toplist-site.com/ these toplists also can determine the productivity of the traffic you sent to it and has many hidden anti cheating features. so pay attention to the linking instructions before and after sign up as not every toplist is the same. Back to Top The Gate When a visitor from your site clicks on the link to the toplist it will sometimes face a "gate" on which there are usually a link titled "Enter". the visitor must click on the "Enter" link in order to enter the site and for the visitor to be counted as a "hit in" in your credit. that "Enter" link can also be titled "Click here to visit this site" or something of that sort, whatever the toplist owner configured. sometimes this gate can also include a "Leave" link or a few advertisements. The reset the counting of the "hits" coming from the sites of the toplist is reset every month, week day or whatever is set by the toplist owner. in a reset all the "hits" amounts that were counted become zero. and the counting start all over again. why is this done ? What can I do to make my rankings better on a toplist ? Simply put: send in more traffic. make sure the link to the toplist is at a good place on YOUR site, that get a good amount of traffic for example you main page or preview page. don't be surprised of you can't get your site to get a good ranking on a toplist if you buried the link to it at the bottom of a "links page". Why should I join a toplist ? traffic to YOUR site is the main gain from joining a toplist. A toplist is a "traffic generator" for the sites that are listed on it. a visitor that comes to the toplist usually clicks more than one link (site) on it, because basically the visitor has nothing else to do there as the toplist itself doesn't have any content of it's own - only links to other sites. it's only purpose is to send traffic to the sites listed on it. so the more sites there are in a toplist the more traffic it can generate. In most cases your site will receive more traffic than it sends the toplist. Back to Top Important rules / points before joinings
  • Most toplists require for your site to send traffic to the toplist before it will make your site appear on the toplist. this is done so that the site that just registered to the toplist proves to be an active site that can actually send traffic to the toplist and to it's members.
  • Most toplist lists have a "reset" after a certain period. (see explanation) so if at some point you look for your site and can't find it at the toplist - be sure that the toplist didn't just reset.
  • The better toplists use a "entrance gate" on which it requires the visitor that comes from a site registered as a member/site of the toplist to do a certain action as click a button or some other things to make sure the visitor is indeed human.
  • Troubleshooting & FAQ
Question: I signed up to a toplist and inserted the link they gave me to a page on my site but I still don't appear on the toplist
Answer: Did you send enough traffic to the toplist ? do you realize the appearence and position of your site in the toplist is determined by the traffic your send to it ? You might want to place the link in a page that receives more traffic.
Question: I say my site on the toplist just yesterday and today it's gone, what happened ?
Answer: Unless you tried to cheat the toplist, most likely the toplist was just reset. your site will appear again soon if you keep the traffic to it steady.
Question: The link they gave me didn't have unique id, like  http://www.toplist-site.com/toplist/in.php?id=special_id    like all the other toplists, how the hell are they going to count the traffic I send them ?
Answer: most likely that toplist is using a new generation of toplist script, most likely a better one. read about it here.
